ToggleUnless you’re an avid train enthusiast, using public transport while travelling often feels like a necessity rather than a highlight. Buses, trams and subways may offer practicality but little excitement. However, one form of transport might be worth including in your itinerary: the cable car. Gliding above mountains or cities, these rides offer breathtaking perspectives of your surroundings. Below are some of Europe’s most extraordinary cable car experiences worth venturing for – provided you don’t fear heights.

Paris became home to the longest urban cable car in Europe when Câble C1 opened in December 2025. The line connects Pointe du Lac station in Créteil to Villa Nova in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges. Instead of extending Métro Line 8, the city chose this option due to the hilly landscape in its suburbs. Covering 4.5 kilometres, the Câble C1 trip lasts about 18 minutes in total.

Fans of James Bond might recognise the rotating restaurant Piz Gloria in the Bernese Alps, featured in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969). Adventurers, however, have another reason to visit – the world’s steepest cable car. The Schilthorn Cableway, beginning in Stechelberg and heading to Mürren, ascends 775 metres in roughly four minutes, reaching a gradient of 159.4 per cent. The entire climb to the Schilthorn peak takes around half an hour.

From the mountain village of Zermatt in Switzerland, the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing takes you up to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, at an altitude of 3,821 metres. It stands as the highest place in Europe accessible via cable car, offering stunning views across both the Swiss and Italian Alps. Visitors can also dine at Europe’s highest restaurant here. From the glacier paradise, another cable car descends to Breuil-Cervinia in Italy, crossing the Alps’ highest border by cableway.

Switzerland presents numerous exceptional cable car journeys, and CabriO Stanserhorn ranks among the boldest. Passengers can ride from Kälti Valley to the mountain aboard a cable car featuring an open-top deck. Naturally, it operates only during summer. The seven-minute ascent ends at a revolving restaurant serving Älplermagronen, Switzerland’s take on mac and cheese, and visitors can meet mountain rangers eager to share their knowledge of local wildlife.

On Engelberg’s Titlis Rotair, every spot offers a great view. During the five-minute ascent, the cabin completes a full 360-degree rotation, ensuring panoramic vistas for all travellers. At the summit, guests can explore Europe’s highest suspension bridge and a fascinating glacier cave.

Most cable cars might be intimidating to those afraid of heights, but the Sassolungo lifts in Italy can unsettle even the claustrophobic. Known as coffin lifts due to their narrow standing-only design, each gondola fits just two people. Travellers must run to hop in as the cabins move continuously, and step out while it’s still in motion at the other end. These lifts operate only in summer, serving as gateways to several scenic hiking trails from the summit.
Leaving the Swiss and Italian peaks behind, Ylläs Ski Resort in Finland offers a truly distinctive experience: a sauna gondola. Each 20-minute journey accommodates up to four people, allowing passengers to enjoy a traditional Finnish sauna while suspended in the air. At night, riders might even glimpse the Northern Lights. Once at the top, visitors can continue their relaxation in another sauna or in an outdoor jacuzzi.
