Leonardo signed a contract with Abu Dhabi Ship Building, part of EDGE Group, to provide naval combat systems for eight FALAJ 3 offshore patrol vessels ordered by Kuwait under the Al Dorra programme. The deal includes the Combat Management System, the 76 mm SUPER RAPIDO gun with STRALES guided ammunition, and the KRONOS NAVAL HP radar.
Military cooperation between Italy and Kuwait was also reinforced through a renewed three-year agreement on Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, covering personnel training, electronic warfare support, and joint activity management. Kuwait previously ordered 28 Leonardo-built aircraft, and support and local training services will continue at Ali al Salem air base until December 2029.
Italy maintains a military presence in Kuwait with 320 troops stationed at Ali al Salem base, alongside MQ-9A Predator drones and Eurofighter jets. Their mission includes surveillance, reconnaissance, and support for operations aimed at protecting civilian and military personnel in Iraq, as well as joint exercises with the Iraqi Air Force.
Leonardo’s cooperation with EDGE, developed over two decades and linked to around 30 naval units, is also advancing toward a joint venture expected to become operational in 2026. The new company will support defence activities in the United Arab Emirates, including design, production, training, intellectual property licensing, and workforce development, further strengthening Leonardo’s role in the Persian Gulf.
