Pakistan’s army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Tehran for peace talks related to the US-Israeli war in Iran. He was welcomed by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni and Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who had recently met Iranian officials during earlier visits.
Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the visit does not indicate a decisive breakthrough, noting that major disagreements remain. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also said there had been only limited movement in the talks and warned that other options remain if negotiations fail.
US President Donald Trump said he was delaying military action because serious negotiations were taking place, though he described the situation as close to either an agreement or renewed attacks. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is participating seriously in diplomacy despite deep mistrust of the United States and past military actions.
A major issue in the talks is the Strait of Hormuz and the US blockade of Iranian ports. Iran has effectively closed the strait, raising concerns about global energy supplies and the wider economy. Rubio said reopening the waterway was discussed with NATO foreign ministers and that an alternative plan would be needed if talks fail.
The European Union also expanded its Iran sanctions framework to include individuals linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, calling Iran’s blockade contrary to international law.
