A gas explosion struck the Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan county at about 7:30 pm on Friday, causing a sharp rise in casualties. State media reported that more than 80 people were killed, while nine remained trapped underground. Chinese President Xi Jinping called for full rescue efforts for the missing, medical treatment for the injured, and an investigation into the cause. Six emergency rescue teams with 345 personnel were dispatched to the site.
