Ukraine prioritises AI-powered drone swarms in its defence strategy, signalling a major shift in modern warfare and military innovation.

Ukraine’s defence industry is working on scenarios in which hundreds of artificial intelligence-powered robots move in coordination to carry out autonomous attacks on targets. As the country enters the fourth year of Russia’s invasion, technology known as drone swarms has become one of the most discussed topics in Ukraine’s expanding military technology sector.
Systems Designed to Operate Without Human Intervention
Drone swarms are based on the use of large numbers of unmanned aerial vehicles that move together without direct human intervention to perform specific missions. Officials state that these systems could help offset Russia’s numerical advantage and allow a limited number of operators to manage dozens or even hundreds of attack drones at the same time.
Main Objective Is to Protect Soldiers’ Lives
Andrii Lebedenko, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, told AFP that the main objective is to save the lives of soldiers. He said projects in this field are currently under way, but not yet on a large scale, and added that broader deployment may become possible in the coming years.
Russia has also made artificial intelligence and drone technology a military priority. Some experts indicate that Moscow may already have deployed a fully autonomous system on the battlefield.
