As of 8 May 2026, Instagram has removed support for end-to-end encryption in direct messages. With this change, messages sent through Instagram DMs are no longer protected by end-to-end encryption.

End-to-end encryption had been available on Instagram as an optional feature since 2023. It was not enabled by default for all users and had to be activated separately for each chat. The feature was also not rolled out widely across the entire user base.

Meta said the decision was based on low usage rates. According to the company, the number of users who chose end-to-end encryption in Instagram DMs remained limited, leading to the removal of the feature on 8 May 2026.

End-to-end encryption is a security system that allows only the sender and recipient to read message content. When enabled, the platform provider cannot access the messages. Following the change on Instagram, messages returned to a standard encryption model, meaning Meta may access content when necessary.

The change means Instagram DMs no longer offer the same level of message protection available on services such as WhatsApp or iMessage. Meta stated that users seeking end-to-end encryption can use WhatsApp. The company continues to support end-to-end encryption on WhatsApp and Messenger. Other services outside Meta, including Signal and iMessage, also continue to offer this feature.

Users who previously used end-to-end encrypted chats on Instagram were notified to download any messages or media they wanted to keep. The notice was issued to help users preserve content from their encrypted chat history.

The removal of the feature came shortly before the Take It Down Act took effect in the United States. The law requires online platforms to remove non-consensual intimate images and AI-generated deepfake content within 48 hours and to take measures to prevent the same material from being uploaded again, according to information reported by the Associated Press.
