Enhanced Accessibility Features Released by Google for Android and Chrome

New Accessibility Tools for Android and Chrome

Google has unveiled a series of enhanced accessibility features for both Android and Chrome platforms. One of the standout features allows users to magnify text on web pages without altering the overall page layout. This is achieved through an on-screen slider, enabling personalized text size adjustments either specific to a single page or applied universally across all sites.

New Accessibility Tools for Android and Chrome

Improved Text Zoom Functionality

Previously, zooming in on a webpage within Chrome’s Android app resulted in the entire page being enlarged, complicating navigation. With the new update, users can selectively increase text size by accessing the three-dot menu located at the top right of the browser interface.

Advanced Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

Enhancements have also been made to the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) tool in the Desktop version of Chrome. This feature, which debuted in beta earlier this year, now fully recognizes text within scanned PDFs, offering the ability to highlight, copy, search, and integrate with screen readers. It has been rolled out for all users.

Gemini Integration in TalkBack

Google is further expanding the Gemini integration in the TalkBack application on Android devices. This screen reader is capable of identifying and describing images displayed on the screen. The latest update empowers users to inquire about image specifics, such as the color of an object, its material composition, or other elements present within the image.

Expressive Captions: Bringing Emotion to Subtitles

Introducing the “Expressive Captions” feature, Google aims to convert audio content into subtitles while also conveying the emotional nuances of the dialogue through AI. For instance, during a sports match, the emotions of the commentator or auditory cues like cheering will be reflected in the captions. This innovative feature is currently available in English across the US, UK, Canada, and Australia on devices running Android 15 and above.
