ToggleUS President Donald Trump recently welcomed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to the White House. During their meeting, Trump highlighted a significant conversation he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as akin to ‘two children fighting in the park.’ He suggested that such conflicts may need to continue for a while before resolution is possible.
Trump hinted at potential sanctions, stating, ‘When I realize it’s not going to stop, we’re going to be very tough. It can happen to both countries. It takes two people to tango,’ indicating that both Russia and Ukraine could face repercussions if the conflict persists. He emphasized that halting the Ukraine-Russia war is his ‘top priority,’ asserting, ‘We will stop it.’
Chancellor Merz expressed a shared responsibility among nations to end the conflict, calling the US a ‘key actor’ in achieving peace. He reassured that Germany would continue to support Ukraine, noting the stark difference in tactics used by the conflicting nations. ‘Ukraine is only hitting military targets. Russia is targeting energy infrastructure and civilians. That’s the difference,’ Merz stated.
Addressing Elon Musk’s criticism of the tax cut law, Trump expressed his disappointment with Musk’s stance. ‘I helped him a lot, but what he expected from me was not appropriate,’ Trump commented, particularly regarding Musk’s objections to the removal of the electric vehicle obligation. He recounted Musk’s departure from the Oval Office, noting a shift in his attitude afterward, which Trump attributed to a ‘Trump obsession syndrome.’
On trade matters, Trump expressed optimism about reaching a ‘good deal’ with the European Union, with Germany’s collaboration being crucial. Despite the potential for a 50 percent tariff, Trump assured that ‘tariffs are not a problem or we will make a deal.’
Regarding US-China relations, Trump mentioned upcoming talks between US delegations and Chinese officials. While a trade agreement has been reached, ‘clarifying some points’ remains necessary. Trump welcomed Chinese students to the US, stating it would be an ‘honor,’ though he noted they would undergo a level of scrutiny.
