The Board of Directors of Liberty Mutual Insurance has announced a pivotal leadership change. Timothy M. Sweeney has been elected as the Chairman of Liberty Mutual Holding Company Inc., commencing his role on April 9th, 2025.
Sweeney, who currently holds the positions of President and Chief Executive Officer, will take over from David H. Long, who is set to retire as Chairman and Director.
Long has dedicated four decades to Liberty Mutual, ascending to the roles of President in 2010, Chief Executive Officer in 2011, and Chairman in 2013. Sweeney was appointed as President and Chief Executive Officer in January 2023 following Long’s retirement from the role of Chief Executive Officer.
Reflecting on this transition, Sweeney remarked, “David’s tenure has been marked by his steadfast commitment to excellence and the welfare of our employees. His leadership has consistently transformed challenges into opportunities, ensuring that our core values remain central to our mission.” He added, “On behalf of the Board of Directors and our entire organization, I extend heartfelt gratitude to David for an extraordinary forty-year journey with the company and wish him and his family all the best for the future.”
Long expressed his sentiments, saying, “Witnessing the transformation of this organization has been a cherished experience. My deepest appreciation goes to our incredible team, who make Liberty Mutual an exemplary workplace, and to the leadership team for their dedication to advancing our business. I am profoundly grateful for my time with the company and for everyone’s unwavering resolve to uphold our promises to customers, partners, communities, and each other.”
In a notable financial achievement, Liberty Mutual reported a net income of $4.383 billion for 2024, a remarkable increase from the $213 million recorded in 2023.
