HarmonyOS Makes its Debut on PCs
In a significant move, Huawei is extending its proprietary HarmonyOS to PCs, following its success in smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. At the recent HarmonyOS Computer Technologies and Ecosystem Conference, the company presented the PC version of HarmonyOS for the first time.

Huawei’s Strategic Shift to HarmonyOS
After facing US-imposed restrictions, Huawei has strategically pivoted towards HarmonyOS. This shift has led to the operating system gaining traction across various consumer electronics. The latest development in this strategy is the unveiling of the PC version, marking a significant milestone in Huawei’s quest to build a self-reliant ecosystem that is independent of both Android and Windows.

Innovative Features of HarmonyOS for PC
Huawei has developed HarmonyOS for PC from the ground up, incorporating key components like the Harmony kernel, Ark engine, StarShield security framework, ArkTS programming language, ArkUI interface library, and DevEco development tools. This version introduces stringent permission protocols for developer verification, application signature validation, and screen recording. Notably, the “Super Privacy Mode” disables camera, microphone, and location access across the system. Additionally, full disk encryption is implemented at the chip level, ensuring data remains inaccessible unless the screen is unlocked.
Enhanced Productivity with HarmonyOS Office
The introduction of HarmonyOS Office promises enhanced productivity through features such as cross-device synchronization, unified account management, and AI-driven interaction capabilities. Huawei also announced new business solutions tailored for enterprise customers, supported by two unique cloud platforms.
Release Date and Availability
While detailed specifics are yet to be revealed, the official launch of the HarmonyOS PC version is scheduled for 19 May. However, it remains uncertain which devices will initially support this operating system or the level of developer support it will attract.
