S&P Global Ratings Adjusts Fidelis Outlook Amid Financial Challenges

S&P Global Ratings Revises Fidelis Outlook to StableS&P Global Ratings has adjusted its outlook for Fidelis from positive to stable. This change comes following significant aviation-related losses in the fourth quarter of 2024 due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, coupled with projected losses of $160-$190 million from the California wildfires in January 2025.In 2024, Fidelis reported an underwriting income of $8.3 million with a combined ratio of 99.7%, a stark contrast to the previous year’s $327.3 million underwriting income and a combined ratio of 82.1% for 2023.Factors Influencing the OutlookThe revision by S&P reflects the comparatively weaker underwriting performance of Fidelis in 2024 in relation to its industry peers. The agency anticipates that the underwriting results for 2025 might continue to face challenges due to the financial impacts of the California wildfires.Performance Expectations and Risk ManagementS&P commented, “It is less likely that Fidelis will meet our performance expectations as outlined in our previous positive outlook.” Despite efforts to reduce exposure to natural catastrophes by modifying catastrophe risk exposure and bolstering capital in direct and facultative insurance within specialty lines, Fidelis’s earnings and capital remain vulnerable to volatility. This is evidenced by adverse developments in the Aviation and Aerospace sector, alongside vulnerabilities in areas such as marine, political violence, terrorism, and cyberattacks.Future Prospects and StabilityDespite these hurdles, S&P’s stable outlook signifies confidence in Fidelis’s ability to maintain capitalization at the 99.99% confidence level through 2026. The rating agency also expects the firm to continue advancing its enterprise risk management framework and to strengthen its partnership with Fidelis. Conclusion”We expect Fidelis to continue leveraging its robust underwriting capabilities, which have historically yielded industry-leading results,” S&P concluded.
