Microsoft Endorses Google’s Agent2Agent Protocol

In a major step towards enhancing interoperability among AI platforms, Microsoft has announced its support for the open protocol known as Agent2Agent (A2A), which was introduced by Google last month. This strategic move will integrate A2A into Microsoft’s Azure AI Foundry and Copilot Studio, facilitating seamless communication between AI agents across various platforms and services.

AI Agents Collaborating Across Borders

The A2A protocol, unveiled by Google in April, is designed to enable AI agents operating within diverse cloud environments and applications to collaborate effectively. Through this protocol, agents can engage in tasks such as setting objectives, delegating duties, and initiating actions, regardless of their platform origins.

Microsoft’s commitment to supporting the A2A protocol will empower developers by enabling the integration of agents developed on Azure AI Foundry and Copilot Studio with those on other platforms. For instance, while a Microsoft agent manages scheduling for a meeting, a Google agent can seamlessly handle the task of sending out email invitations for the same event.

Apart from endorsing the A2A protocol, Microsoft has also joined the A2A working group on GitHub, allowing the company to play a direct role in the protocol’s ongoing development. This comes in the wake of Microsoft’s recent introduction of MCP (Model Connectivity Protocol) support into Copilot Studio, another protocol by Anthropic that aims to standardize how AI systems access various data sources.
