Meta Partners with Constellation Energy for Sustainable Power

Meta has entered into a pivotal agreement with US-based Constellation Energy to secure a sustainable and reliable energy supply for its AI-driven data centers. This 20-year collaboration involves Meta acquiring nuclear energy from the Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois. By 2027, Meta plans to procure approximately 1.1 gigawatts of carbon-free nuclear power annually, marking its first direct engagement with nuclear energy. This initiative is part of Meta’s commitment to sustain its artificial intelligence infrastructure using eco-friendly resources.

Meta’s pursuit of renewable energy reflects its broader mission to fulfill the energy demands of its data centers exclusively through renewable and clean sources. The company has underscored the significance of nuclear power in delivering consistent and reliable electricity.

Averting Closure: Revitalizing an Existing Nuclear Facility

Rather than constructing a new plant, Meta’s deal aims to extend the life of an existing facility. This agreement is crucial for the long-term viability of the Clinton Clean Energy Center, safeguarding over 1,000 local jobs. The nuclear plant, at risk of closure since 2017, can generate sufficient electricity for nearly 800,000 households. Additionally, Meta has committed to enhancing the energy grid with an additional 30 megawatts.

While financial details remain undisclosed, Meta lags behind industry leaders like Google and Microsoft in adopting nuclear energy. These tech giants have already secured substantial nuclear capacity to power their data centers. However, Meta is targeting the integration of 1 to 4 gigawatts of nuclear power into its US data centers by the early 2030s.
