Huawei’s Bold Move in AI Technology

Huawei, the renowned Chinese technology leader, is making significant strides into the artificial intelligence (AI) sector with its cutting-edge Ascend 910D AI chip. This advancement signifies a potential shift in the market dynamics, as Huawei positions itself to challenge Nvidia, the current dominant force in China’s AI landscape.

Huawei's Bold Move in AI Technology

Anticipation for the Ascend 910D

The eagerly awaited Ascend 910D chip is now undergoing rigorous testing, with sample distributions to Huawei’s domestic partners anticipated by the end of May. According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, this development could signal a decline in Nvidia’s market leadership as Huawei intensifies competition. Nvidia currently grapples with new export restrictions and faces pressure from rapidly advancing competitors.

Technical Edge of Ascend 910D

Though specific technical details of the Ascend 910D remain undisclosed, rumors suggest that Huawei’s latest chip may outperform Nvidia’s Hopper-generation H100 AI accelerators. The H100, a frontrunner in China’s AI industry, may soon contend with the formidable Ascend 910D. Previously, Huawei’s Ascend 910C chip underperformed expectations, competing only with the lower-tier H20 AI GPU. Despite this, it marked an achievement for Huawei.

Advancements in AI Clusters

Beyond standalone AI GPUs, Huawei is also pioneering AI cluster solutions. The company has developed the CloudMatrix 384 AI cluster, integrating Ascend AI chips to achieve performance levels close to NVIDIA’s GB200 NVL72 “Blackwell” AI server. Huawei’s focus remains on maximizing performance over efficiency in these developments.

Challenges in Huawei’s Path

Despite these advancements, Huawei faces notable challenges. Supply chain constraints remain a significant obstacle, as the company relies on chips from SMIC and TSMC, which were supplied pre-sanctions. This dependence limits Huawei’s ability to fully satisfy market demand. Furthermore, the necessity to utilize older HBM2 technology means that energy efficiency is not yet a primary focus.
