Morningstar DBRS, a leading authority in credit ratings, research, and risk analysis, has reported that the global property and casualty (P&C) reinsurance sector showcased robust profitability in 2024. This was largely driven by favorable underwriting conditions and substantial investment income. However, the firm cautions about potential challenges on the horizon due to market volatility, geopolitical tensions, and natural catastrophe events.
Companies such as Axis Capital Holdings, Hannover Re, Munich Re, and Swiss Re demonstrated growth in net earnings. Despite this, the sector’s total net income experienced a minor decline, slipping from $32.4 billion in 2023 to $30.9 billion in 2024. The decrease was primarily caused by adjustments to SCOR Re’s Life & Health insurance assumptions and substantial losses incurred by Lloyd’s stemming from natural catastrophes and market volatility during the year’s final quarter.
Nevertheless, Bermuda-based reinsurers made a positive contribution to the sector’s overall net income, bolstered by strong underwriting and investment outcomes.
In light of growing geopolitical risks and economic uncertainties, including the potential ramifications of U.S. tariffs and evolving central bank actions in response to inflation, Morningstar DBRS revised its outlook for the P&C reinsurance industry from positive to stable.
Although reinsurers performed commendably in 2024, the threat of further natural catastrophe losses remains a significant concern. Forecasts for an active hurricane season in 2025 add to the uncertainty for the upcoming year.
Reinsurers sustained strong combined ratios and profitability in 2024 due to favorable pricing, improved terms and conditions, and a strategic reduction in exposure to less profitable sectors. Though global insured losses from natural disasters were considerable, reinsurers have responded by increasing reinsurance rates and adjusting terms to mitigate impacts.
The industry’s adeptness in managing large losses, such as the Los Angeles wildfires in early 2025, underscores its resilience. Major players like Munich Re and Swiss Re continue to project growth in net income for the year despite significant claims.
The higher interest rate environment has also proven advantageous, allowing reinsurers to reinvest maturing assets into higher-yielding fixed-income securities, augmenting investment income by 15.1% year-on-year.
While U.S. tariffs have escalated costs for personal lines insurers, potentially affecting reinsurance profitability, the sector’s strong capital positions and pricing adjustments should help counter these pressures moving forward.
Looking ahead to 2025, Morningstar DBRS anticipates a more challenging operating environment for global P&C reinsurers, marked by potential sustained market volatility and geopolitical risks. Nevertheless, the firm remains cautiously optimistic, expecting the sector to navigate these headwinds effectively, supported by a robust financial foundation and prudent risk management strategies.
