In a recent social media post on platform X, Musk forecasted that sophisticated robots might surpass the skills of top human surgeons within a mere five years. He referenced his own company, Neuralink, which employs a robot to implant brain-computer interface electrodes, as an example. Musk highlighted that this intricate procedure demands a level of speed and precision that robots are uniquely capable of achieving.
Musk’s assertion that robots will outshine the best surgeons so soon has sparked surprise and skepticism among social media users and experts alike. Many questioned the feasibility of such a claim. One user, Joel Selanikio, pointed out that today’s surgical robots function not as autonomous entities but as sophisticated instruments directed by skilled surgeons.
Dr. Sankar Adusumilli, a seasoned surgeon experienced in robotic procedures, echoed this sentiment. He emphasized that while robots can enhance a surgeon’s capabilities by executing precise movements, they do not independently conduct surgeries.
Having performed over 2,400 robot-assisted operations, Dr. Adusumilli stressed that robots, although capable of refining movements, lack the ability to make critical, real-time decisions required during surgical procedures. He underscored the individuality of each patient and expressed his reluctance to entrust detailed surgical decisions to a machine.
