Uber has rolled out its first fully autonomous robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi, marking a major step in its global expansion of self-driving technology. The launch follows the company’s partnership with the Chinese autonomous vehicle firm WeRide, making Abu Dhabi the initial city outside the United States to host Uber’s driverless operations.
Through this new program, passengers requesting rides via the Uber app under UberX or Uber Comfort may now be paired with a WeRide-operated robotaxi. These vehicles run entirely without human drivers, relying on advanced navigation and safety systems to ensure a reliable and seamless travel experience.
Expansion Across Abu Dhabi
At the time of launch, the service focuses on trips within Abu Dhabi’s central districts. However, both companies have confirmed plans to extend operations to additional areas by the end of the year, aiming to make fully autonomous travel an accessible reality for a broader range of passengers.
Growing Autonomous Mobility in the Middle East
According to Uber, WeRide currently manages a fleet of more than 100 robotaxis across the Middle East. This initiative not only demonstrates rapid advancements in the regional autonomous vehicle industry but also signals a strengthening commitment to sustainable and innovative urban mobility solutions.
