The latest update for Nintendo Switch, version 20.0.0, ushers in a variety of new features designed to enhance user experience, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 hybrid gaming console. Key highlights of this update include Virtual Playing Cards and the innovative GameShare functionality.

Nintendo has outlined the features included in this update as follows:

• Virtual Game Card
  • All purchased Nintendo Switch digital software, downloadable content (DLC), and select free software are now represented as virtual game cards, displayed in a dedicated menu.
  • You can install and remove these virtual game cards on up to two Nintendo Switch systems, providing greater flexibility.
  • Family group members within the same Nintendo Account can loan virtual game cards to each other. For additional details, please refer to the Virtual Game Card Guide.
• GameShare
  • The GameShare feature allows compatible software to be shared and enjoyed together from a single Switch 2 system to other nearby systems, promoting a more communal gaming experience.
  • Note that gameplay sharing is restricted to local wireless connections, and the initial launch of GameShare must occur on the Switch 2 system.
  • This feature is specifically designed for the Switch 2 and is not compatible with the original Switch, Switch – OLED Model, or Switch Lite systems.

Additionally, a new User Authentication feature has been introduced to enhance security by allowing access to the Virtual Game Card menu to be controlled via a PIN or Nintendo Account login.

With the integration of Online License Settings, users can now play downloaded software or DLC they have purchased without needing the virtual game card installed, as long as the system maintains an Internet connection.

Moreover, the ability to transfer saves between the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 is being implemented. Users can perform a system transfer using local communication. Both local and server-based system transfer services require an Internet connection and a Nintendo Account.

Furthermore, users can select multiple saves in the custom menu and transfer them simultaneously. For those who may lose access to their Switch before acquiring a Switch 2, there is an option to upload system transfer data to a dedicated server, ensuring no data is lost in transition.
