EU Unveils New Energy Labeling System for Smartphones and Tablets

Introduction of a Pioneering Labeling Initiative

The European Union is set to launch an innovative labeling system aimed at enhancing transparency for consumers regarding the energy efficiency and battery longevity of smartphones and tablets. This initiative mandates that all device packaging sold within Europe prominently display this new label.

Introduction of a Pioneering Labeling Initiative

While this comprehensive regulation encompasses a majority of smart devices, exceptions are made for models featuring foldable screens and devices released prior to 2025.

Key Aspects of the New Labeling Requirements

The European Union’s new guidelines will introduce familiar energy labels, commonly seen on household appliances, to mobile devices. The system mandates adherence to five critical criteria:

  • Durability: Devices must be made resistant to impacts, dust, and water, ensuring longevity in various conditions.
  • Battery Performance: Batteries are required to sustain 80% of their original capacity after a minimum of 800 complete charge-discharge cycles.
  • Repairability: To support sustainability, manufacturers must offer spare parts for 7 years following product discontinuation and ensure availability within 5 to 10 working days.
  • Software Support: Devices should continue receiving updates for at least 5 years post-market withdrawal.

Implementation and Broader Impact

The labels, accessible through the European Product Registry for Energy Labeling (EPREL), will detail seven distinct criteria, such as battery life, device durability, software support, and repairability metrics. These measures align with the European Commission’s strategic objective to bolster energy efficiency and curb carbon emissions by 2030.

The new regulations are slated to take effect on June 20, 2025, and are anticipated to potentially influence global market practices.
