Discord’s New Facial Scanning Feature for Age Verification

Facial Scanning for Age Verification on Discord

Popular chat and community app Discord has launched a trial of facial recognition technology for age verification among users in the UK and Australia. This initiative, described by the company as “experimental,” aims to comply with legal regulations that restrict minors’ access to digital platforms.

What Does This Mean for Discord Users? For users seeking access to sensitive content, Discord now requires age confirmation through facial scanning. This process is triggered when users encounter content flagged by the system as sensitive or when they attempt to change their settings to access such content. Users can verify their age by using their device’s camera to scan their face or, alternatively, by uploading a scan of a driver’s license or another official ID. Discord assures that this collected information is used solely for age verification and that neither the company nor its partners retain any data. The face scanning occurs directly on the user’s device, and all authentication data is deleted once the verification process is complete.

Legal Context and Public Reaction

New Regulations, New Controversies Both the UK and Australia have recently enacted laws to control young people’s access to online platforms. In Australia, for instance, a complete ban on social media usage by those under 16 is expected by year-end. However, the requirement for platforms to implement “reasonable precautions” has sparked debate. Critics argue that identity verification methods could infringe upon privacy rights. Moreover, the Australian government’s decision to exempt some educational platforms has drawn criticism for perceived inconsistencies. While apps like TikTok face restrictions, YouTube remains accessible to young users, leading to accusations of “arbitrary exemptions.” Similarly, Turkey is considering measures to limit social media use among under-16s, mandating platforms to integrate age verification tools.
