A devastating fire broke out at a popular discount supermarket in Hermosillo, Mexico, resulting in a tragic loss of life. At least 23 individuals were confirmed dead after an explosion during the Day of the Dead festivities caused the Waldo’s store to erupt in flames. Local authorities also reported that 11 more people sustained injuries as rescue teams rushed to the scene.
Sonora’s Governor, Alfonso Durazo, expressed his sorrow in a video message shared online and confirmed that a full and transparent investigation would be carried out to determine the exact cause. He also revealed that among the deceased were several children, amplifying the community’s grief and shock.
Preliminary Findings and Official Reactions
State Attorney General Gustavo Salas announced that early forensic examinations indicated toxic gas inhalation as the primary cause of death for most victims. This finding highlights how quickly smoke and fumes spread through the building following the explosion.
In response to the disaster, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum conveyed her condolences to the bereaved families via social media, assuring that government support teams have been dispatched to assist both survivors and relatives of the deceased. She emphasized the nation’s solidarity with those affected by the incident.
Although the investigation remains ongoing, preliminary reports from local media point toward a possible electrical malfunction as the trigger for the explosion. City authorities, however, have ruled out the likelihood of an attack, focusing instead on uncovering the store’s safety conditions and compliance with fire regulations.
