The traditional memory kits, long a staple in computing, may soon be replaced by new standards. While DIMMs used in desktop computers are likely to stay for a while, SO-DIMMs on mobile platforms are set to be phased out, making way for the new standard: CAMM (Compression Attached Memory Module).
Initially introduced by Dell and showcased at events like Computex, CAMM memory is gradually becoming the industry norm. Dell’s proprietary design is poised to replace the aging SO-DIMMs in laptops, bringing a new era of memory with its unique advantages. This includes a second revision, CAMM2, and a variant known as LPCAMM, similar to the differences between DDR and LPDDR.
JEDEC, the RAM standards body, has embraced CAMM as the next standard for laptop RAM. With hundreds of members, JEDEC is pivotal in developing CAMM for specific notebook classes. Dell’s original CAMM design serves as the foundation, with room for enhancements as the technology evolves.
SO-DIMMs have reached their performance ceiling, especially with the accelerating speeds of the DDR standard. CAMM offers a solution with higher speeds and a greater performance ceiling. Its unique design provides a compact solution that can replace multiple SO-DIMMs with a single module, saving space and enhancing performance without bottlenecks. Additionally, CAMM supports dual-channel RAM with just one module.
First revealed by Dell in April 2022, the CAMM design was aimed at overcoming SO-DIMM limitations. Dell collaborated with JEDEC to develop CAMM2, ensuring it became an industry standard. The design’s “Compression Attached” feature allows for a lower Z-height and a compact form factor, enhancing cooling efficiency and speed by shortening the electrical paths between memory and CPU.
The CAMM2 standard supports both single-channel and dual-channel RAM, offering flexibility with modules ranging from 8 GB to 128 GB. It’s a solution that addresses both aesthetic and functional needs, reducing the motherboard footprint by approximately 60% while improving power efficiency.
In September 2023, Samsung introduced LPCAMM memory, a revolutionary solution combining LPDDR5X technology in a compact, efficient package with significant performance improvements. The LPCAMM promises to reshape the landscape for mobile devices, offering a dynamic and efficient computing experience.
