Tesla Model Y Leads Europe Once Again as Chinese Automakers Gain Momentum

Despite a mixed performance by Tesla across various European markets, the Tesla Model Y reclaimed its title as the continent’s best-selling car in September. A total of 25,938 Model Y units were delivered last month, marking only an 8.6% decline from the same period last year. This rebound is notable, especially considering the model’s fall to 17th place in August and even 60th in July.

Close behind, the Renault Clio secured second place with 20,146 registrations, while the Dacia Sandero took third with 19,200 units. On a yearly comparison, however, Dacia Sandero maintained a dominant lead with 185,947 cars sold, whereas Tesla’s Model Y totaled 109,793 sales in the same timeframe.

Chinese Automakers Double Their Market Share

Beyond Tesla’s resurgence, the biggest story lies in the rapid expansion of Chinese car manufacturers across Europe. Their market share has more than doubled year-over-year, reaching 7.4% of all new vehicle sales compared to just 3.3% previously. In total, 90,571 Chinese-made cars were purchased in September. Leading the charge, MG registered 33,536 vehicles, while BYD achieved a remarkable fivefold increase in its European sales within a single year.

The September figures reveal that Tesla’s strength in the EV market remains influential, even as competition from traditional European manufacturers and emerging Chinese brands intensifies. The dynamic shifts suggest that upcoming months could bring even fiercer rivalry on European roads.
