Prudential plc has undertaken a significant reshuffling of its executive team in Asia, appointing John Cai to the newly created position of regional chief executive officer for Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and agency distribution, effective April 7. This move follows Solmaz Altin’s decision to step down from his role as regional CEO for growth markets, health, and agency, as he returns to Europe due to personal commitments concerning his children’s education. Altin will remain with the company as a senior advisor until mid-2025 to ensure a smooth transition.
Based in Hong Kong, Cai will directly report to Prudential plc CEO Anil Wadhwani. With over 20 years of leadership experience in the Asian insurance industry, Cai has previously held senior roles at AIA Group, overseeing operations in areas including China and Vietnam, and has led agency transformations. He also served as the CEO of AXA Hong Kong.
Wadhwani expressed his enthusiasm for Cai’s appointment, stating, “In John, we have hired a true industry expert. The wealth and breadth of his experience will be a real asset to us, and we look forward to welcoming him to the business.”
Prudential’s leadership reorganization includes broader structural changes to the Group Executive Committee, redistributing responsibilities across various regional heads to align with strategic priorities in growth markets. Wadhwani acknowledged Altin’s contributions, highlighting his impact on the company’s growth strategy.
“I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to Solmaz for his impactful contribution to Prudential. In his three years with us, Solmaz has driven the growth and profitability of his 15 markets, most notably turning around our business in Indonesia. He has played a crucial role in developing and implementing our transformation strategy, including leading our technology transformation,” Wadhwani remarked.
Prudential Hong Kong has introduced PruNextGen, a comprehensive value-added platform aimed at supporting policyholders’ children through educational, skills development, and wellness services. This initiative is launched alongside the Entrust Multi-Currency Plan, a legacy planning solution designed for multi-generational wealth transfer.
Developed through partnerships with academic and health organizations such as HKU SPACE, Crimson Education, ARCH Education, Britannia, EC Healthcare, and Quality HealthCare, PruNextGen offers learning tools, university preparation services, and access to both physical and mental health resources.
Ivan Choi, Prudential Hong Kong’s chief customer and marketing officer, noted the growing parental demand for holistic development tools. Recent findings show that while 90% of parents with children under 15 support alternative education paths, only a third have taken action. “This is why, besides launching a new financial product, we also introduced PruNextGen to help these parents future-proof their children with a forward-thinking mindset and practical skills for navigating a future full of new possibilities,” Choi stated.
The core of the initiative is the “Future Institute,” featuring the NextGen Visionary Ventures program, developed with HKU SPACE, and the Future Intelligence Programme, an online series from Crimson Education. The curriculum covers financial literacy, digital communication, leadership, and critical thinking. Additional services include admissions consulting, mock exams for UK schools, international education strategy sessions, and mental health assessments. Immunization services and visa medical support for overseas students are also part of the package.
