In an insightful interview with The Atlantic magazine, President Trump shared his perspectives on a range of issues, encompassing both domestic and international politics. The interview, conducted by editor Jeffrey Goldberg, who previously featured in a controversy regarding the leaked Yemen attack plans via a Signal chat, offered a glimpse into Trump’s current mindset.
Reflecting on his time in office, Trump drew a comparison between his first and current term, stating, “In my first term, I was juggling two main tasks: leading the nation and navigating through survival. Now, in my second term, I am not only leading the country but also engaging with global affairs.” He emphasized his increased confidence in his decision-making and the enjoyment he derives from his role.
Addressing the possibility of pursuing a third presidential term, Trump clarified his stance: “That would certainly be a significant shift. While it’s not a path I’m actively seeking, I remain open to exploring alternative approaches. Undertaking such a move would present formidable challenges,” he acknowledged.
Trump also shared his views on the ongoing peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Expressing confidence in Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump remarked, “I trust that Putin will navigate the peace negotiations effectively. My goal is to save lives, recognizing that while the conflict involves Ukraine and Russia, it has the potential to escalate into a global crisis.”
Moreover, Trump addressed the unexpected inclusion of Goldberg in a Signal chat group discussing Yemen war plans. He expressed his faith in Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, stating, “I had a constructive conversation with Hegseth, and I believe in his ability to overcome this issue.” Trump also defended Waltz amidst media scrutiny, asserting that “Waltz is handling the situation well.”
Turning to domestic concerns, Trump criticized the prior Biden administration’s handling of border security and the issue of irregular migration. He touted his own administration’s achievements, declaring, “We implemented highly successful measures to secure our borders.”
When questioned about his rapport with American billionaires, Trump attributed it to a newfound respect, noting, “Perhaps they were initially unfamiliar with me, but now they recognize my leadership.”
