Negligence Claims Arise After Australian Tourist’s Death on Lizard Island Expedition

Negligence claims follow the tragic death of an Australian tourist on a Lizard Island expedition, sparking safety and accountability concerns.

Negligence claims follow the tragic death of an Australian tourist

Suzanne Rees, an 80-year-old tourist from Sydney, tragically lost her life during what was meant to be a once-in-a-lifetime voyage around Australia aboard the Coral Adventurer, a vessel operated by Coral Expeditions. The elderly traveler joined an excursion to Lizard Island, but during the challenging hike toward the summit, she began feeling unwell and decided to turn back.

Unfortunately, reports suggest that she was not accompanied as she made her way back, and the crew allegedly departed the island without realizing she was missing. The oversight only came to light when Rees did not attend dinner that evening, prompting a grim discovery the following day.

Discovery and Investigation

Rees’s body was found the next morning, roughly fifty meters away from the walking trail. It appeared she had fallen from a cliff or steep slope. Queensland police confirmed that no foul play was suspected, though a full investigation is underway to uncover how such a lapse occurred.

Her daughter, Katherine Rees, expressed heartbreak and disbelief, openly accusing Coral Expeditions of failing to ensure her mother’s safety. She stated that this tragedy was the result of “negligence and a lack of basic responsibility.” According to her account, the crew did not properly count passengers before departing the island, leaving her mother isolated and vulnerable in extreme heat.

Company Response and Safety Concerns

Coral Expeditions’ CEO, Mark Fifield, shared condolences and reiterated the company’s cooperation with ongoing inquiries, saying, “We extend our deepest sympathies to the Rees family and are deeply saddened by this tragic event.” The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and occupational safety authorities have since launched formal investigations to determine how Rees’s absence went unnoticed.

The tragedy has reignited public scrutiny over tourism and passenger safety protocols in Australia. Similar incidents have haunted Australia’s tourism history; notably, in 1998, American couple Tom and Eileen Lonergan vanished during a dive trip after their crew left the site, unaware they were missing.

This latest event has once again underscored the necessity for tour operators to adopt stricter accountability measures, ensuring no traveler is ever left behind in such preventable circumstances.
