MSI unveils GPU Safeguard+, offering real-time PSU-level protection and enhanced reliability for next-gen graphics cards.
MSI has taken an innovative step in power protection technology with the introduction of GPU Safeguard+, specially engineered for graphics cards that use the 12V-2×6 power connector. Unlike traditional solutions that focus solely on the cable or GPU, this system monitors power flow at the power supply unit (PSU) level, offering advanced and proactive protection.
The core of this technology lies in its ability to track and analyze real-time current fluctuations passing through each wire of the connector. By doing so, it can detect potential voltage inconsistencies or connector-related faults before they escalate into physical damage or overheating issues. This is particularly valuable during heavy gaming sessions or GPU-intensive workloads, where unstable power transmission is most likely to occur.
MSI’s new approach emphasizes software-assisted protection coupled with direct hardware intervention from the PSU side. If the system detects abnormal power behavior, it issues an immediate warning through the MSI Center interface and triggers an audible buzzer alarm. These early alerts enable the user to take corrective actions, such as reducing power load or shutting down the system safely.
Should the warning go unaddressed, the system’s second-stage protection automatically intervenes by cutting GPU power, thereby preventing potential thermal or electrical damage. This elegant chain of responses demonstrates MSI’s dedication to combining smart diagnostics with robust physical protection.
GPU Safeguard+ also supports dual 12V-2×6 line monitoring, optimizing safety for high-end GPUs like the MSI GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning that use multiple connectors. Each line is individually monitored, allowing the PSU to respond accurately to the specific channel causing irregular current flow.
Currently, the technology is integrated into MSI’s premium-grade MPG Ai1600TS PCIe 5.0 and MPG Ai1300TS PCIe 5.0 power supplies. The company plans to extend support to additional PSU models, giving more users access to this enhanced stability and safety feature.
With GPU Safeguard+, MSI establishes a benchmark by addressing one of the industry’s most recurring challenges — connector reliability under extreme loads — through a system that’s intelligent, responsive, and designed for the next generation of gaming hardware.
