Explores rising casualties and growing humanitarian challenges in Gaza as a fragile ceasefire struggles to hold.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza reported new figures revealing the growing human cost of Israeli strikes and the recovery of bodies from beneath collapsed buildings. Over the past 24 hours, hospitals received three bodies recovered from the wreckage, four newly deceased from recent attacks, and six wounded individuals in need of treatment.
Since the onset of the ceasefire, more than 236 people have lost their lives, 600 others sustained injuries, and 502 victims’ remains were retrieved from the rubble. The ministry highlighted that the cumulative number of deaths from Israeli operations, which began on October 8, 2023, has now reached approximately 68,865 casualties, with 170,670 people injured across the Gaza Strip.
Officials added that out of the 225 bodies returned by Israeli authorities, 193 have been identified by relatives, while thousands more are feared trapped beneath collapsed structures, awaiting recovery and identification.
Negotiations hosted in Egypt led to the announcement of a ceasefire on October 9, when U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that both Israel and Hamas accepted the initial phase of an agreement. The deal, signed in Cairo and approved by the Israeli government, officially took effect at noon on October 10 following the army’s pullback to the so-called “yellow line.”
Despite the agreement, sporadic Israeli attacks continue to strike various parts of Gaza under different pretexts. These violations have raised concerns about the sustainability of the ceasefire and the ongoing humanitarian crisis facing civilians on the ground.
