Microsoft has made headlines with a fresh round of layoffs that follow a significant downsizing of its global workforce earlier this year. According to an official filing with the Washington State Department of Employment Security, the tech behemoth has terminated 305 employees at its Redmond headquarters. This recent development brings the total number of layoffs in Washington to nearly 2,300 in just the past few weeks.
In a statement, a company spokesperson confirmed that the new job cuts are an extension of last month’s major layoffs, which impacted roughly 3 percent of Microsoft’s global workforce, equating to around 6,000 employees. “We continue to implement the organizational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace,” the spokesperson noted, emphasizing that the latest reductions are “significantly less” than 1 percent of Microsoft’s total workforce.
While there was no explicit mention of how AI technologies might influence these decisions, Microsoft stated that their overarching strategy is to empower employees to concentrate on the most meaningful and impactful work through the adoption of emerging technologies. The company highlighted its longstanding practice of periodically evaluating its workforce to align with evolving business needs.
