Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri recently shared an in-depth reflection at the end of 2025, highlighting that the rise of synthetically generated content is reshaping how we perceive truth in the digital space. He cautioned that the world’s rapid transformation outpaces even social media platforms, emphasizing that it is no longer safe to assume photos or videos portray genuine moments.
According to Mosseri, humanity has long trusted visual media as a mirror of reality. However, he believes that societal behavior is now shifting. “We will soon evolve from accepting what we see as real to questioning it instinctively,” he said. This shift, he explained, will challenge our natural tendency to believe our own eyes. The adjustment will take years, demanding that users learn to assess who shared a post and why it was shared.

ToggleMosseri underscored that platforms such as Instagram must reinvent themselves to address this new landscape. He proposed that the focus should lie in creating advanced generative tools, transparent labels for AI-produced visuals, and verification technologies that confirm authentic media. He also suggested improving algorithmic visibility for original content and giving more weight to credible accounts.
While these objectives are valuable, many critics argue they come too late. The internet is already overflowing with what users call “AI slop” — poorly generated or misleading artificial material. In the near future, Mosseri predicts, one of the few ways to identify authenticity may be through imperfections unique to real photos. Yet, as artificial intelligence learns to replicate these flaws flawlessly, even those signs could vanish.
Looking ahead, Mosseri envisions that the key to authenticity will not rest solely within the content itself but within its origin. He advocates for embedding cryptographic signatures directly into cameras so that every genuine image carries a verifiable digital fingerprint. This approach would allow audiences to confirm content authenticity at the moment of capture, rather than relying on descriptive tags or watermarks added after publication.
In essence, Mosseri’s message is clear: as synthetic media expands, trust must become a technology of its own. The future of social media may depend not on what we see but on how we prove it was ever real.
