The Windows Search service is responsible for handling search queries on your system. If it stops working, your search bar might become unresponsive.
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type services.msc and hit Enter.
- Locate Windows Search in the list of services.
- Right-click and select Restart. If it’s disabled, choose Properties, then set Startup type to Automatic.
Sometimes, restarting File Explorer can resolve temporary issues with the taskbar and search functionality.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager.
- Find and select Windows Explorer under the Processes tab.
- Click Restart.
Windows 11 includes a built-in troubleshooter specifically for search problems.
- Open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
- Find Search and Indexing and click Run.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to detect and fix issues.
If search results are incomplete or not showing, rebuilding the index might help.
- Go to Control Panel → Indexing Options.
- Click Advanced.
- Under the Index Settings tab, click Rebuild.
- This process might take some time depending on your files.
Microsoft frequently releases updates to fix known bugs and issues. Keeping Windows 11 up to date ensures optimal performance.
- Go to Settings → Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates and install any available ones.
Corrupt system files can cause the search bar to malfunction. Use the Command Prompt to fix them.
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Enter the command: sfc /scannow.
- After the scan completes, run: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.
Once done, restart your PC and check whether the search bar is working again.
If all else fails, you can reset the search feature completely.
- Open PowerShell as an administrator.
- Run the following command: Get-AppxPackage MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS | Reset-AppxPackage.
- Restart your system.
