Greenlandic parties unite to assert independence, declaring they seek neither

Joint Declaration from Greenlandic Political Parties

The leaders representing all political parties in Greenland released a joint statement underscoring their firm opposition to external forces attempting to shape the nation’s destiny. The declaration remarked that potential influences, particularly from the United States, could arise but affirmed that only the Greenlandic people have the authority to decide their own future.

“WE WILL BE GREENLANDIC”

Party leaders conveyed a strong commitment to national identity and self-determination, stating, “We will not be American, we will not be Danish; we will be Greenlandic.” The statement emphasized that Greenland operates under a democratic framework established by the Home Rule Act, with government and parliament members elected directly by the people and acting with full democratic legitimacy.

“NO COUNTRY CAN INTERVENE”

While the declaration affirmed that cooperation with the United States and Western nations would persist, it stressed that such collaboration must rely on mutual respect and adherence to international law. It further stated, “The future of Greenland depends on the decision of Inuiaat Kalaallit (the Greenlandic people). No nation has the right to meddle in this process.” The message also highlighted Greenland’s growing responsibilities and visibility on the international stage, reaffirming that relations would be carried out diplomatically and respectfully, with dialogue and friendship as the guiding principles.

The joint statement set forth the following priorities:

– Enhancing dialogue with friendly and allied nations,
– Scheduling parliamentary meetings earlier to ensure political stability and coordination,
– Safeguarding the interests of the Greenlandic population amid exceptional developments,
– Preserving the nation’s security and welfare in ways that serve Greenland’s best interests,
– Ensuring that Greenland remains the homeland of the Greenlandic people, governed by their own decisions.
