Ford’s Persistent Recall Activity in Early 2025

As we move beyond the first quarter of 2025, Ford continues to maintain a brisk pace of recall announcements. The renowned American automotive manufacturer has initiated at least 40 distinct recall campaigns from January 1 to April 18, 2025. With the latest announcement concerning a brake issue impacting 123,611 vehicles, Ford has been issuing new recalls at an average interval of every 2.7 days this year.

However, despite the frequent nature of these recalls, there is a silver lining for Ford compared to previous years.

Reduction in Affected Vehicle Numbers

While the recall notices may seem frequent, the total number of vehicles being recalled has markedly decreased. Since the start of this year, Ford has recalled an aggregate of 1,235,235 vehicles, which is nearly 1 million fewer than the same period in 2024. An analysis of data from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveals that almost half of Ford’s recalls this year have impacted fewer than 1,000 vehicles.

Remarkably, 5 of the recall campaigns pertain to fewer than 100 vehicles, including one specifically for just 2 units of the 2021 Maverick model to correct faulty software installed during a prior recall.

Ongoing Challenges for Ford

Even with these 21 recalls considered part of their auditing process, Ford remains ahead of all other car manufacturers in terms of both the total number of recalls and the number of vehicles affected within the US market.

Since the beginning of the year, other automakers have reported fewer recalls: Volkswagen with 12, General Motors with 9, and both Honda and Stellantis with 8 each. Ford is decisively leading in terms of the number of affected vehicles, with over 1.2 million units. Tesla ranks second, but with 661,810 vehicles recalled, which is half the number recalled by Ford. Following Ford, Volkswagen (346,401), Toyota (317,359), and Honda (316,489) are the other major brands impacted.
