European Football Weekend Recap

The Weekend in European Football

While the football action paused in England due to the FA Cup fixtures, the top leagues in Germany (Bundesliga), France (Ligue 1), Spain (LaLiga), and Italy (Serie A) continued in full swing over the weekend. Barcelona in Spain, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in France, Inter Milan in Italy, and Bayern Munich in Germany retained their positions at the top of their respective leagues. Despite the break, Liverpool remains at the summit in the English Premier League.

PSG on the Brink of the Title

PSG took a significant step towards clinching the Ligue 1 title by thrashing Saint-Etienne 6-1 in an away fixture. The goals for PSG came from Desire Doue (2), Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Joao Neves, Ibrahim Mbaye, and a penalty conversion by Gonçalo Ramos. Meanwhile, Monaco secured a 2-1 victory over Nice, while Olympique Marseille suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Reims.

PSG remains unbeaten, having notched up their eighth consecutive league win, sitting comfortably at the top with 71 points after 27 games. Monaco trails with 50 points, followed by Olympique Marseille with 49 points. PSG could potentially seal the title in the next matchweek if they secure points against Angers or if Monaco drops points against Brest.

Barcelona Marches On

LaLiga leaders Barcelona extended their winning streak to nine matches with a 4-1 triumph over Girona at home. Robert Lewandowski (2), Ferran Torres, and Ladislav Krejci were on the scoresheet for the Catalans. Defending champions Real Madrid edged past Leganes with a 3-2 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu, featuring goals from Kylian Mbappe (2) and a penalty by Jude Bellingham. National player Arda Güler started the match but was substituted by Rodrygo in the 62nd minute.

Atletico Madrid, however, failed to win for the third consecutive game, drawing 1-1 away to Espanyol. After 29 matchweeks, Barcelona leads with 66 points, Real Madrid is close behind with 63 points, Atletico Madrid follows with 57 points, and Athletic Bilbao rounds out the top four with 53 points.

Inter Milan Holds the Italian Fort

In Serie A, Inter Milan maintained their top spot by defeating Udinese 2-1 at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. National player Hakan Çalhanoğlu featured for 64 minutes. Marko Arnautovic and Davide Frattesi found the net for Inter, while Oumar Solet scored for Udinese. Napoli, their closest competitors, overcame AC Milan with a 2-1 victory, thanks to goals from Matteo Politano and Romelu Lukaku, while Luka Jovic scored for Milan.

Inter Milan leads Serie A with 67 points, with Napoli in second at 64 points, and Atalanta in third at 58 points after 30 fixtures.

Bayern Munich Back on Track

In the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich returned to winning ways with a 3-2 victory over St. Pauli at the Allianz Arena. Harry Kane and Leroy Sane (2) ensured the win for Bayern. Bayer Leverkusen kept up the pace in the title race with a 3-1 victory over Bochum, while Eintracht Frankfurt edged Stuttgart 1-0 at home.

Bayern Munich remains the frontrunner with 65 points after 27 matches, with Bayer Leverkusen chasing at 59 points, and Eintracht Frankfurt in third with 48 points.
