EU Car Market Sees Surge in Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Demand, Volkswagen Group Leads Sales

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) has published the latest data for September, revealing a remarkable 10% growth in new car registrations across the European Union compared with the same month last year. This upward trend underscores the region’s ongoing shift toward more sustainable vehicle technologies and stronger consumer confidence in cleaner mobility solutions.

Hybrid cars took the spotlight during September, representing 34.7% of all new vehicles sold throughout EU member countries. Meanwhile, the overall market penetration of electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid models climbed to a record-breaking 63.9%. Sales of fully electric cars jumped by 20% year-on-year, reaching 167,586 units, while traditional petrol-based models dropped to 24.9% and diesel-powered vehicles fell further to just 8.1% of total sales.

Steady Growth Through the Year

From January to September, total EU car registrations rose by 0.9% compared to the same period in the previous year, with cumulative sales hitting 8,057,335 units. Particularly strong recoveries were noted in key markets such as Germany (up 12.8%) and Spain (up 16.4%), reflecting solid consumer demand amid broader industry transformation.

Steady Growth Through the Year

Volkswagen Group Maintains Dominance

Brand rankings for September show the Volkswagen Group maintaining its leading position, delivering 241,368 new vehicles across the EU. It was followed by the Stellantis Group with 133,305 registrations and the Renault Group securing the third spot at 100,817 sales. The strong performance of these manufacturers highlights their strategic emphasis on diverse powertrain offerings and innovation-driven mobility solutions.

Overall, the European car market continues to pivot toward electrification, with rising hybrid and EV adoption suggesting that the shift to a cleaner automotive future is becoming irreversible.
