Domenico Tedesco addresses questions about his departure, emphasizing Fenerbahçe’s unity and sense of home for the team.
Following Fenerbahçe’s 2-0 triumph over Galatasaray in the Turkcell Super Cup final, coach Domenico Tedesco expressed his joy, emphasizing that winning the cup was a satisfying accomplishment. Speaking at the press conference held at Atatürk Olympic Stadium, the Italian coach began his remarks by acknowledging January 10, World Press Freedom Day.
“We Could Have Scored Three or Four”
Tedesco highlighted the prestige of the trophies earned, explaining, “Lifting trophies carries great importance for many, and for me as well. Yet, it is not the only thing that matters in football. Sometimes avoiding relegation or advancing a struggling team in the standings can hold similar significance even without a trophy. Still, I’m delighted with today’s outcome. We controlled the match, particularly in the first half, and created several clear opportunities. We could have added a third or even a fourth goal. Galatasaray fought hard, but it was a strong, high-tempo contest. We’re thrilled for our supporters and proud to have secured this cup for the entire Fenerbahçe family.”
“GUENDOUZI HAS BEEN HERE FOR EIGHT MONTHS”
Tedesco also celebrated the performance of Matteo Guendouzi, the team’s new transfer who netted the opening goal and was chosen as the man of the match. “Bringing Guendouzi to Istanbul was a great move. Completing the transfer early in the window was crucial; winter transfers are rarely easy, but our club did a brilliant job. You could see today the energy and character he delivers on the pitch. He played as if he had been part of the squad for eight months,” the coach stated.
“AN INCREDIBLE ATMOSPHERE”
The Italian manager admitted that the extreme weather conditions challenged both the team and the fans. “Having such a passionate fan base is very special. In Adana as well, every seat was filled with Fenerbahçe fans—about 15,000 of them. It was truly unbelievable. This support is the best motivation for players and coaches alike. We now turn our focus to our next league fixture against Alanyaspor. The first match against them at home was also a difficult one. Some of our players are injured—Levent limped today, and Archie remains sidelined. However, we’ll give everything until the final whistle,” he said.
“LEVENT AND MERT DID A GREAT JOB”
During the game, Tedesco reminded his players to maintain possession, noting that Galatasaray were well-organized when in control of the ball. “Galatasaray are strong on the wings—Barış is an exceptional player, but today Mert performed superbly against him. Sane has scored in every game where he played against me in Germany, but as a team we defended compactly. Levent and Mert performed excellently. Nevertheless, we had to retain control of the ball. At times, we were forced to sit deeper, and in those moments, midfielders needed to push us forward. We’ve been working on this since my arrival; defending deep is never easy,” he explained.
“Kerem’s Assignment Was to Support Levent”
The coach revealed that opposing wingers were under constant pressure. “Kerem’s role was to assist Levent while applying pressure on Sane, sometimes creating triple pressure in transitions. Such players can determine outcomes. We witnessed a similar example in the last Trabzonspor match when Sallai ran behind the defense,” he added.
“WE HAVE A GREAT PRESIDENT”
Tedesco underlined that both he and his team have remained fully dedicated to their on-field duties. The 40-year-old manager also noted that he focuses on tactical and technical aspects, supported by an outstanding video analysis and athletic performance team. “We’ve seen remarkable improvement in our physical performance. We also have a fantastic president—he was upset yesterday because I didn’t say he’s smart and handsome, so I’ll say it now. We are united, and matters beyond our control should not distract us,” he stated.
TRANSFER COMMENT
Responding to questions about possible departures, Tedesco explained: “Having too few players is problematic, but an overly crowded squad is not ideal either. We must be fair to every player; some deserve to play but don’t get enough minutes. We’re evaluating which positions are overloaded and which are balanced. Making the right call takes time, yet for those who remain, this club will always be their home. Age or name doesn’t matter—our support continues. They will keep earning their opportunities through training and performance.”
