ToggleAccording to recent data from China’s Ministry of Transport, the cumulative cargo throughput at the nation’s ports amounted to 5.75 billion tons during the first four months of 2025, alongside 110 million TEU in container handling. This represents a 3.7% increase in cargo volume and a 7.9% rise in container units compared to the same timeframe in the previous year.
The figures for April, a period marked by heightened trade tensions due to tariff escalations initiated by US President Donald Trump, reflected a robust 4.8% year-over-year growth in cargo handling. Notably, China’s exports surged by 8.1% during April compared to the previous year, despite the challenging trade climate.
On April 2, a pivotal announcement by US President Donald Trump introduced additional tariffs targeting several trade partners, with a notable focus on China. This initiated a reciprocal tariff exchange, where the United States escalated tariffs on Chinese goods to 145%, while China countered with a 125% tariff on US imports.
While Washington extended a 90-day grace period on additional tariffs for other nations, levies specifically targeting Chinese imports were implemented without delay. In response to the escalating tensions, high-level delegations from both nations convened in Geneva, Switzerland, on May 10-11 to negotiate tariff reductions and reached a temporary reprieve agreement.
The bilateral accord, effective May 14, stipulated a reduction of US tariffs on Chinese imports to 30% and Chinese tariffs on US goods to 10% for a 90-day period. However, on May 30, President Trump publicly accused China of breaching this interim agreement, expressing his intent to discuss the matter directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping, with hopes of reaching a resolution.
