China is on the brink of a transformative leap in its quest to dominate the field of artificial intelligence and robotics. By 2025, the nation aims to mass-produce humanoid robots, signifying a monumental shift for the industry. According to a comprehensive report by market research firm TrendForce, six of China’s eleven key humanoid robot manufacturers have set ambitious targets to produce over 1,000 units this year alone. This surge in production is projected to elevate the total market value of humanoid robots in China to approximately 4.5 billion yuan (equivalent to $616 million).
Among the trailblazers spearheading this initiative are prominent companies like Unitree Robotics, AgiBot, Galbot, Engine AI, and Leju Robotics. Their efforts are not merely technical milestones; they are strategically aligned with China’s broader objective of decreasing reliance on foreign technology. Notably, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has also set his sights on the mass production of his Optimus humanoid robot. However, a significant portion of U.S.-based manufacturers still rely heavily on Chinese suppliers for critical components, a dependency that poses potential tariff-related challenges. This reliance inadvertently grants Chinese firms a competitive edge in the global market.
Despite these promising developments, certain technical hurdles remain. A recent half marathon in Beijing served as a stark illustration of these challenges. In the 21.1-kilometer race, humanoid robots were among the participants, yet only six out of the twenty entrants managed to complete the course. The ‘Tiangong Ultra’, a creation of the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, emerged as the leading robot by completing the race. However, it took approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes to finish, during which its battery required manual replacement three times, lagging behind human runners. According to CTO Tang Jian of the company, enhancing battery capacity negatively impacts both the robot’s weight and its walking balance. Clearly, there remains significant room for improvement in areas like battery efficiency and mobility.
