In a remarkable acknowledgment just ahead of International Women’s Day on 8 March, 108-year-old Hakoishi Shitsui from Japan has been recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest working female barber. This honor, announced by NHK, the state television, celebrates her lifelong dedication to the craft as a women’s hairdresser in Tochigi Prefecture.
At a heartwarming ceremony attended by her community and loyal patrons, Hakoishi reflected on her journey, saying, “My life has been filled with challenges since my early years. Yet, people travel from far and wide to meet me, so I am determined to continue my work as much as I am able.” Following her heartfelt words, she was presented with the Guinness World Records certificate, marking an extraordinary milestone in her career.
Hakoishi’s journey began in 1912, in the Nakagawa district of Tochigi Prefecture. At just 14, she embarked on her apprenticeship at a Tokyo hair salon. By 1936, she had earned her barber’s license and opened a shop with her husband. Unfortunately, their establishment was destroyed during World War II.
After her husband’s untimely death during the war, Hakoishi returned to her hometown. There, she ran a modest barber shop from home, all while raising her two children. Her indomitable spirit and dedication to her craft never wavered.
In a testament to her enduring strength, the official Kyodo agency reported that Hakoishi was among those who carried the torch in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. Despite her advanced years, she continues to demonstrate her hairdressing skills, although she now limits her clientele due to knee pain.
