With this innovative feature, WhatsApp permits users to select a username in line with specific guidelines. These include important restrictions to ensure usernames are both secure and consistent. For instance, usernames cannot begin with “www.” nor end with a domain suffix like .com or .net. They must include at least one letter, and only lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), periods, and underscores are allowed. These rules are designed to maintain a structured and predictable username system.
Additionally, certain character constraints are imposed: the dot character cannot appear at the beginning or end, nor can two consecutive dots be used. A critical security measure is the requirement for unique usernames. WhatsApp ensures no duplicate usernames exist, and it prevents the use of visually similar characters (e.g., “john” versus “j0hn”) to protect against impersonation and identity theft. Usernames must range from 3 to 30 characters, although this limitation might be adjusted based on user feedback.
