The United States and China have commenced a fresh round of negotiations in London, aiming to alleviate the trade tensions that have been heightened by reciprocal tariff escalations. This development marks a significant effort to mend economic relations between the world’s two largest economies.
According to Xinhua, the Chinese state news agency, China’s Vice Premier for Economic Affairs, Hı Lifıng, is leading the Chinese delegation in these discussions. The meeting, held under the China-US Economic and Trade Consultative Mechanism, sees a high-level representation from both sides.
Representing the United States are Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Together, they will engage with Vice Premier Xi to address the ongoing trade disputes.
Role of the United Kingdom: While London serves as the host city for these crucial talks, the UK government has clarified that it will not play any active role in the proceedings. Nevertheless, the UK has expressed its support for the negotiations and emphasized its commitment to free trade. In a statement, the UK government remarked, “We are a nation that champions free trade, and we have always maintained that a trade war benefits no one. Therefore, we welcome these discussions.”
Prior to the commencement of the talks, UK Finance Minister Rachel Reeves held meetings with both Bessent and Hı, underscoring the importance of these negotiations for global economic stability.
