The Cancelation of an Unannounced Blade Runner Game

Blade Runner: Time To Live, an unannounced game by Supermassive Games, has reportedly been canceled, as per a report from Insider Gaming. This development comes even as fans eagerly anticipate Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth, which is being developed and published by Annapurna Interactive and will bridge the timeline between the original film and its sequel set in 2049.

Reasons Behind the Cancelation

The decision to cancel the project seems to stem from Alcon Entertainment, the rights holder of the Blade Runner franchise. The specific details behind this decision remain elusive, but it is believed that the project was shelved in late 2022.

Concept and Development Details

Set in the year 2065, Blade Runner: Time To Live was envisioned as a character-driven narrative blending action-adventure elements with the philosophical undertones characteristic of the Blade Runner series. Pre-development kicked off in September 2024 and concluded by March, with a prototype anticipated by September 2025. The game was intended for release on platforms like PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series consoles, as well as future PlayStation and Xbox iterations, targeting a launch in September 2027.

Budget and Production Insights

The project had an estimated budget of $45 million USD, with $9 million allocated for external performance capture and talent staging. However, specifics regarding the allocation for music, image rights, actor fees, quality control, playtesting, localization, and future downloadable content were not disclosed.

Gameplay and Narrative

Players would have experienced the game from a third-person perspective, stepping into the shoes of So-Lange, a Nexus-6 model nearing the end of its life cycle. The narrative was set to unfold from New Zurich 2065, moving into the desolate landscapes of a forgotten world. Betrayed and left for dead by Rev, the enigmatic leader of the underground replicant network, players would navigate a hostile environment.
