Sundar Pichai shares insights on AI’s transformative role in the workplace, exploring future trends and innovations in technology.
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet, addressed growing concerns about the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on employment within the company. He confidently dismissed fears that AI might render half of the company’s 180,000 employees redundant. Instead, Pichai assured that the company anticipates continued growth at least into the next year.
“AI will increase productivity by eliminating boring tasks,” Pichai emphasized, highlighting that AI is streamlining engineers’ work by removing mundane and repetitive tasks. This efficiency allows them to concentrate on more impactful and innovative projects. The CEO views AI as an “accelerator,” not a replacement for jobs. He believes it will drive the development of new products, thereby generating the requirement for additional employees.
While Alphabet has experienced rounds of layoffs in the recent past, the reductions in 2025 seem relatively moderate compared to previous years. Earlier this year, the cloud division of Google let go of nearly 100 employees. More recently, several hundred employees were laid off from the company’s platforms and devices division. The layoffs in 2023 and 2024 were significantly larger, with 12,000 and at least 1,000 employees affected, respectively.
Pichai acknowledged the legitimacy of concerns regarding job displacement due to AI, although he admitted that predicting long-term outcomes is challenging. When asked about Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s statements suggesting that AI could displace half of entry-level white-collar jobs within five years, Pichai responded, “I respect that. I think it’s important to raise those concerns and discuss them.”
Towards the end of the interview, Pichai was queried about the potential limits of AI and the possibility of achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI) that mimics human capabilities. He expressed optimism, stating, “I think we have great advances ahead of us with the ideas that we’re working on right now, as well as some new approaches that we’re experimenting with. I’m very optimistic about that.” He added, “But you know, there’s always this kind of progress curve in technology and there can be temporary pauses from time to time. I don’t think anybody can say with certainty right now whether we are on a definitive path to AGI.”
