Automatic shifting systems have been available for bicycles for quite some time, yet they typically require batteries that demand frequent recharging. Shimano’s Q’Auto system introduces a game-changing approach by harnessing energy directly from the cyclist’s pedaling effort.
Designed specifically for urban, trekking, and gravel bikes—whether traditional or electric—the Q’Auto system comprises three essential components: a specially engineered Shimano Cues rear freewheel hub, an integrated wireless Cues rear derailleur, and a handlebar-mounted Shimano Di2 wireless shifter. As the cyclist pedals, the rotational movement of the rear wheel powers a dynamo within the freewheel. This dynamo subsequently charges a lithium-ion capacitor that energizes the shifter’s shift actuator.
The hub is equipped with a microprocessor and sensors that gather data on speed, cadence (pedaling speed), and incline. Utilizing this information, the system automatically adjusts gears to maintain a consistent pedaling cadence. Cyclists can select from “Slow,” “Medium,” and “Fast” pedaling settings via a mobile app or physical controls.
Recognizing that initial default settings may not suit every rider, the system allows for a temporary switch to Manual mode, enabling cyclists to manually shift gears using the Di2 lever. During this phase, the Q’Auto’s AI learns the rider’s unique style and incorporates these insights into the automatic shift mode. Typically, this adaptation process takes about 6 km of riding.
This innovative system will be available in some new bicycle models directly from the factory or can be retrofitted to compatible existing bicycles. As of now, there is no official announcement regarding the price or release date.
