Samsung Electronics has announced its most successful quarterly revenue to date, reporting an impressive $55.66 billion for the first quarter of 2025. This record-setting figure marks a significant increase from the $44.81 billion recorded in the same period of 2023. The strong financial performance is largely attributed to the robust sales of the Galaxy S25 series and other high-end products.
The tech giant’s operating profit also saw a substantial rise, reaching $4.71 billion. This marks a remarkable recovery from Q1 2023, when the company’s operating profit was a mere $499 million.
The Mobile Experience (MX) division was a key contributor to this success. The launch of the flagship Galaxy S25 phones, coupled with a general increase in premium product sales, bolstered the division’s performance.
Conversely, the Device Solutions (DS) division, responsible for semiconductors, faced challenges, posting lower revenues compared to previous years, reflecting ongoing difficulties in the chip industry.
Despite this, the DS division still managed to generate $17.65 billion in revenue and an operating profit of $770 million. The Memory Business within DS showed positive trends, driven by demand for server DRAM and NAND chips, albeit hindered by pricing pressures and slower than expected HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) sales.
Sustaining its commitment to innovation, Samsung’s R&D expenditure reached unprecedented levels in 2024. The first quarter of 2025 alone saw a 16% rise year-on-year in R&D spending, amounting to $6.33 billion.
Looking ahead, the company plans to focus on AI servers and enhance its HBM3E products. Although the Foundry Business faced weak results, it is stabilizing its 2nm process and securing new orders in AI and high-performance computing.
Meanwhile, Samsung Display Corporation (SDC) reported $4.15 billion in revenue and an operating profit of $350 million. While the mobile display sector experienced a seasonal dip in profits, SDC aims to maintain a consistent supply of innovative products, such as foldables.
The large display sector improved its performance with the introduction of new QD-OLED monitors, anticipating growth in gaming monitor demand.
The MX and Networks divisions, encompassing mobile phones, reported a strong quarter with revenue of $25.99 billion and an operating profit of $3.02 billion. The MX Business achieved growth and robust profitability, driven by the successful Galaxy S25 series and its Galaxy AI features.
To sustain its sales momentum, Samsung plans to release the Galaxy S25 Edge and expand AI functionalities to the Galaxy A series. The company is also exploring advancements in foldable phones and augmented reality.
Lastly, the Visual Display and Digital Home Appliances divisions recorded revenue of $10.19 billion and an operating profit of $210 million. The Visual Display Business performed well with strategic product sales, including Neo QLED and OLED TVs. Samsung intends to enhance sales of its 2025 AI TV series, incorporating advanced AI capabilities.
