On Thursday, a new architectural milestone was set in Barcelona as the Sagrada Familia officially became the tallest church in the world. Towering at 162.91 metres, the iconic basilica has now overtaken Germany’s Ulm Münster, which had held the title since the late 19th century with a height of 161.53 metres. The momentous change came after the installation of the first component of the Tower of Jesus Christ atop the central nave, pushing Gaudí’s unfinished vision into a new era.
This latest phase marks the culmination of decades of work on what will eventually be a 172-metre masterpiece when the central tower reaches completion later this year.
