Sagrada Familia Surpasses Ulm Münster to Become the World’s Tallest Church

Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia overtakes Ulm Münster, becoming the world’s tallest church and redefining architectural history.

Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia overtakes Ulm Münster, becoming the world’s tallest

On Thursday, a new architectural milestone was set in Barcelona as the Sagrada Familia officially became the tallest church in the world. Towering at 162.91 metres, the iconic basilica has now overtaken Germany’s Ulm Münster, which had held the title since the late 19th century with a height of 161.53 metres. The momentous change came after the installation of the first component of the Tower of Jesus Christ atop the central nave, pushing Gaudí’s unfinished vision into a new era.

This latest phase marks the culmination of decades of work on what will eventually be a 172-metre masterpiece when the central tower reaches completion later this year. The installation, performed by precision cranes under careful supervision, symbolizes a bridge between the dream of the 19th-century architect and the technology of the 21st century.

The Evolution of Gaudí’s Vision

When Antoni Gaudí began this project in 1882, he understood that it would far outlive him. At the time of his passing, only one of the basilica’s planned towers had been completed. Over more than a century, generations of artisans, engineers, and architects have contributed to turning his visionary blueprints into reality. Today, the Sagrada Familia stands as both a place of worship and a living work of art.

The Evolution of Gaudí’s Vision

Much of the basilica’s progress in recent years has been driven by tourism. In 2024 alone, 4.9 million visitors entered its grand doors, with roughly 15% coming from the United States. Revenue from tickets and guided tours has become the primary force funding ongoing construction. This self-sustaining model has allowed the project to accelerate dramatically since the early 2000s.

A Century of Legacy and Global Inspiration

As the basilica approaches 2026 — the centenary of Gaudí’s death — plans for global celebrations are underway. Exhibitions, cultural events, and masses will commemorate not only his creative genius but also his deep spirituality. Gaudí’s designs, defined by natural forms and divine symbolism, continue to influence architects and artists worldwide.

Beyond the competition of heights and records, the Sagrada Familia now represents a fusion of artistry, devotion, and perseverance. Its ascent to become the world’s tallest church encapsulates the spirit of Barcelona itself — daring, beautiful, and endlessly evolving.
