Explore how Russia and North Korea plan to bolster relations with a new bridge project enhancing trade and connectivity.

The upcoming construction of a massive bridge linking Russia and North Korea is set to begin shortly. This ambitious project will be situated adjacent to an existing railway connection that has linked North Korea with eastern Russia since 1959, known as the ‘Friendship Bridge’.
Completion Anticipated by 2026
Spanning an impressive 4 kilometers, the bridge is projected to be completed by the end of 2026. It will forge a new pathway between northern North Korea and eastern Russia, significantly enhancing regional connectivity. The bridge will traverse the Tumen River, a natural boundary separating Russia, North Korea, and China.
Fortifying Bilateral Relations
In a move that underscores the strengthening ties between Moscow and Pyongyang, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin authorized the project, entrusting its execution to a Russian firm. This decision came unexpectedly in February and was greenlit following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 2024 visit to North Korea.
Putin’s visit was seen as a pivotal moment, marking a significant warming of relations between the two nations. Russian Ambassador to Pyongyang, Aleksandr Matsegora, remarked on the ongoing preparations, indicating that while construction has not yet commenced, the groundwork is actively being laid out, including finalizing design documents, assembling construction teams, and acquiring necessary equipment.
In a related development, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu, during a recent visit to Pyongyang, briefed North Korean leader Kim Jong-un about the ongoing dialogue between the United States and Russia, further highlighting the dynamic geopolitical landscape.
