Recently, a startling revelation emerged that Mr. Hegseth had shared sensitive details regarding an impending airstrike in Yemen via an unsecured messaging app. This incident challenges his credibility as an everyman leader and raises doubts about his suitability to command America’s 2.1 million military personnel.
Across the globe, U.S. military personnel are acutely aware that breaching security protocols can lead to immediate repercussions, including loss of security clearance and potential court-martial. In his inaugural address to the department on January 25, Mr. Hegseth emphasized his commitment to accountability, stating, “Our standards will be high, uncompromising, and clear.” However, this incident suggests a double standard where these operational security norms may not apply to him. Mr. Hegseth has defended his actions, asserting no wrongdoing since the incident surfaced on March 24. The issue arose when Jeffrey Goldberg, editor in chief of The Atlantic, was inadvertently added to a Signal chat by Michael Waltz, the national security adviser to President Trump. The text conversation, later published by Mr. Goldberg, involved senior political figures from the Trump administration discussing a military operation in Yemen. Notably, Mr. Hegseth, unsolicited, revealed details about the aircraft types and the timing of the strikes on Houthi militia positions, ahead of the mission.
Mr. Hegseth maintains that the information shared was not classified. However, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s 2014 guidelines clearly state that “information providing indication or advance warning that the U.S. or its allies are preparing an attack” is considered top-secret. This guideline appears straightforward, so why is there a claim that the shared plans were not classified?
