The renowned Japanese automaker, Nissan, has been navigating through turbulent times. Following a particularly challenging 2024, the company is under heightened financial pressure, exacerbated by the recent tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
In a strategic move to stabilize its finances for 2025, Nissan has opted to cancel two significant electric sedan projects aimed at the American market, as per a recent report.
The decision was first disclosed in a memo sent to suppliers on April 21, according to Automotive News. A Nissan spokesperson confirmed the decision, citing “recent changes in market conditions” as the underlying reason.
However, the “market conditions” mentioned could entail more than just the imposed tariffs.
The first of the two canceled electric sedan models was a Nissan-branded vehicle known internally as LZ1F, which was anticipated to debut at the end of 2026.
The second model, codenamed LZ1E, was to be launched under the Infiniti brand and was slated for a 2027 release.
Insiders suggest that the financial foundations of these two traditional sedan models were unstable even before the tariff impacts emerged. This has led to speculation that Nissan might be using the current economic climate and tariff unpredictability as a justification to pull the plug on these financially precarious projects.
