As New York City prepares for its municipal elections on November 4, the political atmosphere is charged with excitement and tension. Early voting began on October 25, and within just a few days, more than 300,000 residents had already cast their votes, hinting at a remarkably high turnout. The race is shaping up to be not only a local contest but also one of national interest, drawing attention from political figures like President Donald Trump, who has voiced sharp criticism of one candidate, Zohran Mamdani.
According to a recent Quinnipiac University poll conducted between October 23 and 27, Mamdani currently leads with 43% support, followed by Andrew Cuomo with 33% and Curtis Sliwa with 14%. The outcome could mark a major turning point in New York’s political landscape, especially with a candidate who could make history.
At just 34 years old, Zohran Mamdani has captured public attention with his progressive ideals and promise of change. Born in Uganda to an Indian family, Mamdani moved to the United States at age 7 and became a citizen in 2018. If elected, he would be New York’s first Muslim mayor, a historic milestone in the city’s diverse political evolution.
Describing himself as a democratic socialist, Mamdani has energized young and immigrant voters by addressing the city’s escalating cost of living. His campaign focuses on reducing housing costs, enforcing stricter rent control, expanding free childcare, and ensuring accessible public transportation. Beyond domestic policies, Mamdani’s vocal support for Palestine has set him apart on the national stage, though he has also been careful to speak out firmly against antisemitism. Before entering politics, he briefly explored music as a rapper under the name ‘Young Cardamom’.
Former governor Andrew Cuomo, at 67, is attempting a political comeback after his 2021 resignation following sexual harassment allegations. Once a dominant figure in New York politics and a key player during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cuomo now runs as an independent centrist candidate. His platform emphasizes restoring public safety, proposing the hiring of 5,000 new police officers, investing in mixed-income housing, improving education through smaller class sizes, and making healthcare more affordable.
Although his reputation suffered due to scandal and criticism for mishandling nursing home death reports, Cuomo’s long-standing experience and family connections — including his marriage to Kerry Kennedy of the famous Kennedy family — still give him influence among moderate voters.
Known for his trademark red beret and outspoken personality, Curtis Sliwa is once again in the race, this time as the Republican underdog in a predominantly Democratic city. While his chances of winning remain slim, his candidacy could subtly steer votes between Mamdani and Cuomo. Sliwa, the founder of the Guardian Angels subway patrol group, continues to focus on community safety, cost of living, and advocacy for New York’s homeless population.
Unlike many in his party, Sliwa distances himself from Trump and rejects harsh immigration policies. Known for his eccentric lifestyle — including living with 16 rescue cats — Sliwa appeals to a mix of working-class conservatives and urban reformists who value his straightforward approach.
As the election approaches, New York stands at a crossroads: between progressive reform, political redemption, and populist practicality. With national eyes watching closely, the results on November 4 may signal how America’s largest city envisions its future leadership.
